The upper Connecticut River Valley is the home of Vermont's industrial revolution and the site of Vermont's first declaration as a "free and independent state."
Inventiveness has always been celebrated here, and you can explore its local history at places like the American Precision Museum. Pick up a copy of the "Machine Tool Trail" at the Museum and take a self-guided tour through the land of Yankee ingenuity.
This area is a "must-see" for hikers. A portion of the Appalachian Trail crosses Vermont just north of Woodstock. The dramatic plunge into Quechee Gorge and the more gentle ramble through the Vermont Raptor Center are best travelled on foot.
Winter skiing and summer fun can be found at Okemo Mountain and Ascutney Mountain Resort. Rare attractions abound -- drive a team of sled dogs, ride a bobsleigh pulled by Belgian horses, float over New England in a hot air balloon.
